When a customer walks into your store and is looking for a mattress, you have to remember that they are not just buying a piece of furniture to sleep on. They are investing resources in their health, their daily work and social performance, and their overall well- being. One of the key question new mattress retailers ask us is: “Is selling mattresses hard?” The simple truth is, they are hard to sell only if you don’t understand and/or listen to the customer’s motivation for buying.
With over 25 years of experience, we at ILVIDIHA have studied the psychology behind our customers’ buying decisions. In doing so we have gathered 8 key tactics to help you increase mattress sales in your physical and online stores.
1. You Get One Single Chance at making a good First Impression - make it count!
Imagine a new customer walking into your store. Trust between them as a buyer and you as a salesperson begins to form with the first few minutes of interaction. Whether it’s in a physical store or through an online chat, the customer can sense immediately if they are talking with a salesperson or a consultant. You may ask - what is the difference? A salesperson talks about the products, while a consultant listens to the wants and needs of the person in front of them and leads with them.
If you want your clients to be more open to you and the to the offers you present, you must focus on making this first impression a good one. Greet them warmly with a “Welcome! ” and ask with a friendly smile if and how you can help. Salespeople who know how to establish a human connection in those first seconds are the ones who invoke interest and set the stage for a successful sale.
2.You Must Listen to Your Customer’s Needs
Most salespeople do well with the first step, but problems ofter arise when it comes to evaluating the potential customer. Many of them make the mistake of asking limiting and closed questions such as “What budget do you have?” or “What materials do you want in your mattress - foam or spring?“. By doing so, they often miss the most important part - understanding what the customer truly needs, even if he does not realize it.
Open-ended questions will work much better at this point of the communication. For example, you should ask things like: “What is your preferred sleeping position?” or “Do you have any problems with sleep like insomnia or bodyaches?”
These types of questions will help you uncover firstly what product the customer is looking for, and secondly why they’re looking for it. Once you understand their motivation, you can address it directly and build genuine trust in the person that you’re selling to.
3. A Demonstration Is More Important Than You Realize
Once you have understood your customer’s needs, the time has come to offer the right solution. This is where great salespeople stand out and make successful deals in our sphere. Instead of immediately inviting the customer to lie down on a mattress, you have to build a story around the offered product. You must explain its benefits for a good night sleep and highlight for example the texture of the cover, mention cooling technologies if there are such advantages, or point out hypoallergenic properties if your customer suffers from allergies ets. You must use your words to paint the full picture that resonates with the customer.
Then move into the demonstration itself. Invite the customer to sit on the bed and encourage them to lie down in their usual sleeping position and giving them time to really feel the comfort. Help them notice the support zones for examples and guide their attention to how does their back feels, if they are able to fully relax. Ask leading questions like “How do you feel in this position?” “What would you change?” “Do you feel you back less tense?” And then listen carefully - people often voice the very reasons that lead them to make a purchase or not so you are able to adjust your offer.
4. Objections are fought with empathy, Not Arguing
Every salesperson has heard key phrases like “I’m going to think about it” “I’m going to look around” or “I think the price is too much for me”. Instead of accepting these as rejections and shutting down, you must view them as direct invitations to start a dialogue that works in you favor.
When a customer expresses hesitation they often times just need you to give them a sense of security so you must listen first and then respond to them in a calm and focused demeanor.
If it’s about the price - you have to shift the conversation to the value that the product holds. Explain that a quality mattress is a long-term investment in health, happiness and productivity, not just a simple purchase.
If they want to compare with other brands and models - highlight offered product’s advantages making it personal by giving examples that relate to their needs, and emphasize other key factors like warranties, trial periods, or flexible product return policies that set your brand apart.
If they are unsure and make decisions hard - offer extra convenience for them like free delivery, leasing options, or a package deal with a pillow, mattress protector etc.
5. Closing the Deal: Don’t Leave It to Chance
Many deals fall apart at the last minute because the salesperson simply allows the customer to “think about it”. While no one likes excessive pressure, customers do expect guidance and reassurance from you. Instead of waiting, ask directly if the product checks every box of their needs and wants and if so, do they want to have it delivered in two business days.
Give them a reason to say yes. What helps in these moments are limited-time promotions, free gifts when making a purchase, or extended warranties - provided they are realistic and framed around the customer’s benefit, not just the transaction.
6. Encourage and Guide them to Quick Decisions Without Too Much Pressure
Limited-time offers work best because they create a sense of urgency. But that doesn’t mean you should come across as needy or pushy. Instead you should be very specific:
“Since this week there is a free top mattress included with this model, I can reserve one for you today if you’d like.”
When customers see they can gain something without feeling pressured, it builds trust and increases the possibility of a purchase.
7. Use Visual and Emotional Elements To Help
Show, don’t just talk. Interior photos, live demonstrations, or infographics highlighting the key benefits make the product easier to understand. Even online, a compelling visual story with pictures or videos often convinces more effectively than the best written text.
8. Give Customers Reasons to Come Back To You
You can be surprised but the sale doesn’t end when the transaction is complete. On the contrary, that’s when deep loyalty between the customer and your brand truly begins. Sending a thank-you message after the purchase. Checking in after a few weeks to see if they’re satisfied and what you can better for their next experience. Inviting them to join a loyalty program with special benefits or offering them a discount code for their next order. All these things are going to make your customer feel special so that he can return not only for the products but for the way he is treated.
The key to successful mattress sales is much more than learning a few clever tricks. At ILVIDIHA, we believe that salespeople who put the customer at the center of the process will always sell more and better.
